In 1836 the government of the new Republic of Texas recognized the land between the Sulphur rivers as part of Red River County. Without the restrictive regulations of the Spanish and Mexican governments, more settlers arrived, particularly from the South. By late in the 1830s, Dr. Moses Hogue and the Birdwell, Simmons, and Wilson families had established the little village of Ben Franklin.

In 1840, the Congress of Texas formed Lamar County from Red River County, which included all of present-day Delta County. In March 1846, the new state legislature organized Hopkins County, which absorbed the southern two-thirds of the current Delta County.

During the rainy seasons, the area now comprising Delta county was frequently flooded, making it difficult and often dangerous for residents of this area to get to the Lamar or Hopkins courthouses to conduct any required business. In 1868, they petitioned the Legislature to designate a new county for them so they might have a county seat between the oft' flooded Sulphur rivers. They asked that land from Fannin, Lamar, Hopkins and Hunt counties be taken and set aside for the new county. After much debate, Fannin and Hunt counties were unwilling to participate in the land division. On July 29, 1870, the new county was formed from portions of Lamar and Hopkins counties.

Governor Edmund J. Davis designated a five-man board of commissioners to organize the new district, to be called Delta County for its triangular shape. The county seat would be a new town named Cooper after Leroy Cooper, chairman of the House Committee on Counties and Boundaries, and situated directly between the North and South Sulphur rivers. Erastus Blackwell was appointed sheriff to supervise land sales. The first county election was held on October 6, 1870, to organize the municipal government, and Charles S. Nidever, John P. Boyd, J. F. Alexander, Alfred Allen, and J. M. Bledsoe were elected the first county commissioners.

photo * mis_images * right * 150 * delta_origin_map_v3.jpg * Delta Co. All this history is crucial for the genealogy researcher to understand because it will assist in knowing where to look for information. Prior to 1836, all of Texas was part of Mexico. After 1836, most of the current state of Texas was part of the Republic of Texas (a whole separate country, not Mexico and not the United States). A joint resolution was formally passed March 1, 1945 and Texas was admitted as the 28th state of the United States on December 29, 1845.

Although the US Census began in 1790, Texas was not a state and not enumerated in the US Census until 1850. Delta County still did not exist.

Delta was not formed until late in 1870 (after the census was taken). Your ancestors may have settled in what is now Delta county way back in early Texas, but they would not have been counted as residents of Delta County until 1880! Approximately, the top (Northern) third of Delta County was in Lamar county for the 1850, 1860, & 1870 censuses. The approximate bottom (Southern) 2/3 of Delta county was in Hopkins county for 1850, 1860 and 1870 censuses.

Your family may be enumerated in Lamar county or in Hopkins county in 1850, 1860 and even 1870 although they may have lived in the same house on the same land which is now in Delta county.
